MARCH 2017 DigestMonthly news from the United Reformed Church Email: digest@urc.org.uk WHITEMOOR LAKES HOSTS SUCCESSFUL YOUTH ASSEMBLY Inside: • Alison goes to the UN • Baking for homeless people • Blended learning Church leaders meet with Nicola Sturgeon Sandy Nunn (far right), the outgoing United Reformed Church Youth Moderator, reflects on the achievements of URC Youth Assembly 2017, which took place at Whitemoor Lakes, Staffordshire, from 27 to 29 January Youth Assembly always goes by in a hurried blur, but, looking back, I remember feeling overwhelming joy and that the sense that Assembly was a huge success. The Assembly was the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work, and had its fair share of ups and downs, but ultimately it was filled with worthwhile and meaningful memories. There were so many moments when God’s presence was clear over the weekend, from ‘Celebration’ by Kool and the Gang being played as the call to worship, to the meaningful and substantial business that was discussed and decided upon. The Assembly was asked to look at weighty topics, including the future of the Church and our commitment to the environment. An open-ended discussion about the future of the Church highlighted inclusion and equality issues; a resolution was drafted recognising the attention this topic deserves. We also discussed how to encourage synods to find a place for children’s and/ or youth events to be run alongside synod meetings. Work in each of these vital areas will now be tasked to the URC Youth Executive, which will respond and report back at Youth Assembly 2018. New Youth Executive members were inducted – including the next Youth Assembly Moderator, Dan Morrell (pictured front left) – and URC Youth also elected Hannah Jones as the Youth Assembly Moderator-elect. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Youth Assembly Moderator. It has allowed me to grow considerably as a person and as a Christian, and I’ve learnt many transferable skills. The one thing I'll take with me from Youth Assembly will be the passion that young people have. It is so special to be a part of the URC Youth Executive team. A delegation of Church leaders – including the Revd David Pickering, Moderator of the United Reformed Church National Synod of Scotland (third from left) – met Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, on 12 January. The meeting focused on social care, community cohesion and freedom of religion and conscience. Church leaders also highlighted Home Office immigration restrictions and its impact on international Church relations. Mr Pickering said: ‘We were each warmly welcomed and given an open opportunity to ask questions, share thoughts and raise issues.’ Big Day Out: Get your tickets before 31 March! Church leaders meet with Nicola Sturgeon
