I have attended three garden railway meetings in as many weeks and even managed to operate a skeleton service on the PTLR. All of this shoe-horned in between burst of blisteringly hot sunshine, torrential downpours of rain and trying not to disturb the Sparrows, Starlings and Blackbirds who use the railway’s ballast shoulder for sand-bathing ‒ I really should levy a fee. Anyhow, I hope if you find conditions disagreeable for running, that you might find something of interest herein. We begin with a review of the superb new Roundhouse Engineering ‘Darjeeling D-Class’ Garratt. Then take our final trip across the Solent, as Paul Humphrey concludes his series on modelling Isle of Wight railway rolling stocking in Gauge 1. David Turner reports on developments in the motive power department of the East Fen Railway. Meanwhile, Keith Greenwood explains how he went about creating the backdrop to his Elmtree Line. Stephen Thornhill describes his experiences with a delightful live-steam model of Vulcan Foundry locomotive Kathleen. David F Williams takes a look at the new IP Engineering, ‘DHR 4-Wheel Wagon’ kits and describes how he went about adding extra detail. Mike Jeffries then describes how you can modify commercial sound units to work in synchronisation with your locomotive. Finally we come to the next part of Brian Wilson’s constructional series ‘Jack’, where he describes the manufacture of the bufferbeam and frame extensions. Please note that this article includes an updated detail drawing for part of the main frames ‒ I am also pleased to announce that Chris Bird of Summerlands Chuffer has now launched the new section of his website dedicated to the build.
